When it comes to pillows and cushions, you may come across the term “pillow shams”. You may instantly think of it as an indication that something is false. No, a pillow sham is not a false decorative pillow – however similar that may sound – as it is actually part of your top-of-the-bed bedding ensemble. They are also designed to match your duvet coverlet or cover. Just like how pillowcases were designed, pillow shams are also made to cover your pillows. However, there is still a stark difference between pillow cases and pillow shams. The latter is often opened in the middle of the back, and has a slight overlapped fabric.

There is a pretty distinct way of using pillow shams; it is the method of inserting one side (either side is fine) of your pillow into the sham cover, and the opposite side of the sham will cover the other side of the pillow. You will notice that the fabric overlaps in the back, and covers the pillow completely, which is perfectly normal. If you want something that allows for a uniform design around the four edges of your pillow, consider getting pillow shams!

Just Bought a Comforter Set? Check for Pillow Shams!

bedding with modern design sham coversWhy? Because pillow shams are usually sold as part of comforter sets. It may be made from the same fabric as the quilt or comforter, or a different contrasting fabric that accentuates the look of the bedding. Pillow shams turn regular pillows into decorative pillows, and users do not typically sleep directly on them. Instead, they are often placed behind pillows with pillowcases whenever one is sleeping. Alternatively, some individuals also choose to remove them from the bed. In addition, pillow sham covered pillows are also placed in front of pillows in traditional pillowcases when a bed is made.

If Your Pillow Shams become Worn, Simply Replace Them

One of the greatest things about having pillow shams is that they can be replaced when they get worn, and you do not have to worry about finding the right match when buying a new one because it will – pillow sham covers remain the same. If you decide to get a new or more comfortable pillow, just make sure that it is the same size as your old pillow. Replacing a pillow sham is easy because of this convenient feature, as opposed to replacing sheet styles of comforters because they may no longer be available in the design you previously owned.

What are the Benefits to Using Pillow Shams?

One of the main benefits of using pillow sham covers is that they add decoration to your bed. What’s more, they are washable so you do not have to worry if they start to smell from regular use. You should note that some elaborate pillow shams may require dry cleaning or hand washing. Be sure to check the product care instructions that come with your purchased products!
